We are seeing a year on year increase in the number of abandoned cats in Coventry.
For whatever reason some people simply abandon their cats. Some dump them outside petshops or pubs hoping they will be taken to safety, others dump them in the countryside thinking that they will be able to fend for themselves – even 6 week old kittens! Some people just move and decide not to take their cat with them.
It is illegal to abandon a cat and anyone prosecuted for this can face a fine of up to £20,000 and a year in jail. As of March 2023, Cats in England must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks. All cat owners must have their cat microchipped by 10 June 2024.
If you know that a neighbour has moved and left their animals then you should report this to the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999. The calls are taken in confidence, so provide as much information as possible so that the RSPCA can decide whether to prosecute.
If you need to talk to us urgently, please leave a message on 024 7626 8073. Coventry Cat Group group is a small charity run entirely by volunteers, so please be patient if there is nobody to take your call immediately, but we will respond as soon as we can IF we can help
